Why Donate Your donations are extremely important to us.
80% of the food for our clients is from donations, (the other 20% is the SKFB program, that gives us our meat and fruits and vegetables) everything else is from the community-either from Home Cooked Meals, leftovers brought in, or food donated (perishable and non-perishable). 90% of our cleaning supplies that keep the shelter clean and functioning are from donations. The other 10% we are able to buy with donated money. (Please check our wish list to see what items we currently need).
100% of the new toys that we are able to give to kids are from donations. 100% of the clothing, coats, and shoes we are able to give to our clients are donations (we are currently full on clothing). 100% of the baby supplies that we can give our clients are from donations from the community (Such as diapers, bottles, sippy cups, car seats, strollers, etc.).
The Manhattan Emergency Shelter is funded by Federal, State and local grants, and also private contributions. The community's support provides some of the most important kind of support we need. To be located in Manhattan and know that the people of Manhattan truly care about MESI and its cause is a great source of encouragement.. On average Manhattan community members donate more than $40,000 worth of goods to the shelter. Knowing that there are people that we can call upon in our times of need or be able to rely on, on a weekly basis, for some of our needs is wonderful. MESI has a wish list of items that we need on a regular basis (please see list)
We have a full basement that allows us to store furniture, household items, and personal hygiene products. This is great not only to have on hand for daily use, but also for our clients to be able to take with them when they move into their new homes.
